Watching ships at Port Huron
The Blue Water Bridge and the St. Clair River, where the traffic never really stops.
Where to stand
Everything moving between the upper and lower lakes comes through the St. Clair River, in a channel narrow enough that the boats pass a few hundred feet off the American bank. The Great Lakes Maritime Center at Vantage Point is the indoor option, with windows on the water and people who know what is coming. Upstream, the walk along Thomas Edison Parkway takes you under the Blue Water Bridge to Lighthouse Beach and the Fort Gratiot light, where the river meets Lake Huron and a downbound boat first puts her bow into the current. Pine Grove Park, with the lightship Huron on the lawn, covers the stretch below. Point Edward, Ontario, faces all of it from across the river.
Knowing when something is coming
This is scanner country. Vessels work Sarnia Traffic, the Canadian Coast Guard's vessel-traffic service for the river, reporting as they pass each calling-in point, so a handheld radio tells you about a boat long before you see her. Season
Port Huron is the year-round chokepoint. The river stays open and the lower-lakes trades keep running after the Soo shuts: in February 2025, with no Soo crossings at all in our archive, Port Huron still recorded 18. Peak months run about 13 crossings a day, and the single busiest day on record here is 25 November 2025, with 22. Late autumn is genuinely good watching here, which is not true of much of this coast in November.
One local tip
Watch the current before you plan where to stand. It runs hard under the bridge, several knots of it, so a downbound boat comes out from under the span at speed and is gone in two minutes, while an upbound boat working against it crawls. If you see one coming up from the south, you have time to walk to the bridge. If you see one coming down, you do not.
What you are most likely to see
A very wide cast, second only to Detroit River / Ambassador Bridge: 6,474 crossings by 145 distinct vessels, against 70 at Duluth. Alongside the ore boats you get river tankers and smaller lake freighters that never go near Superior. The most frequent were Northern Venture with 167 crossings, Manitowoc with 157 and Robert S Pierson with 145.
