What passed, where, and when.
FreighterLog keeps the record: which boat passed, when, and which way. The archive holds 28,207 recorded crossings at seven chokepoints between January 2024 and December 2025, computed from public AIS tracks. 179 vessels have a log of their own, with every Soo transit and every run through the Duluth canal, first and last passage of each season, and counts by month and by year.
It is not a live map. For where a boat is right now, go to BoatNerd, which runs its own receiver network on the lakes, or to VesselFinder for the salties. Every vessel page links out to both.
What we can answer is the question a live map loses the moment the boat leaves the screen: where has she been, how often does she come past Mackinac, was she out at all last March. Passage times are interpolated from AIS samples, so read them as good to about fifteen minutes, and the archive ends where the public data ends.

Read the clock before the numbers. NOAA publishes in quarterly batches, and the archive currently runs nine months behind, so the passage record here ends at 31 Dec 2025. Nothing on this site tells you where a ship is right now. The one near-live thing below is the Seaway's own transit board, reproduced with its timestamp attached.

The most recent season the archive covers end to end: 13,961 passages by 148 distinct vessels. That is down 2.0% on 2024. The busiest hull was Paul R Tregurtha, with 260 recorded passages.

Reading the codes. Location codes are the Seaway's own. Lock codes name the chamber and, where given, the wall a ship is tied to; in the Welland Canal a lock's north wall is its lower end. C-numbers are the Seaway's numbered call-in points, B-numbers are Welland Canal bridges, and the lake checkpoints carry the crossing track — north, centre or south. Codes we could not verify against Seaway documentation are printed as published. 2 of the 20 codes on this board are in that last category. Full note in the glossary.
This is the newest hourly snapshot of the Seaway's own public transit table, reproduced as published: the times are Seaway local time, which is Eastern, and the location codes are the Seaway's own. The place names beside them are ours, read off Seaway documentation; where we could not confirm a code, it stands alone. A vessel name links to its FreighterLog page only where the name matches the roster exactly.
