Everything moving between the upper and lower lakes passes this line in the St. Clair River, which is why the cast is so wide: 6,474 crossings by 145 vessels, more distinct hulls than any chokepoint except Detroit River / Ambassador Bridge. Traffic continues all winter, at a much reduced rate. The boats run close to the American bank, and the current does most of the work of sorting fast passages from slow ones.
