Our gate line lies across the river at the locks in Sault Ste. Marie, so a crossing here means a boat locked through between Lake Huron and Lake Superior. It is the busiest chokepoint above the Straits: 5,467 crossings by 125 vessels in 2024 and 2025. The record goes silent every February, when the locks are closed for winter maintenance. The public platform in Soo Locks Park looks straight down into the MacArthur; the Poe, which is the only chamber that takes a thousand-footer, is the far one.
